Why Malta Has a Limescale Problem
Malta's water supply comes from reverse osmosis desalination and groundwater extracted from limestone aquifers. The groundwater is extremely hard — over 300mg/L calcium carbonate in many areas. This means white, chalky limescale deposits form on every surface that water touches: taps, shower screens, toilet bowls, kettles, and washing machines.
For short-let hosts, limescale is the #1 bathroom complaint in guest reviews. Guests see white deposits and think "dirty," even if the bathroom was cleaned that morning.
Prevention Is Easier Than Removal
- Squeegee after every shower: Leave a squeegee in the shower and ask guests to use it (many will not, but some will). Alternatively, have your cleaner squeegee all glass during turnovers
- Dry taps after cleaning: Wipe chrome taps with a dry cloth after every clean. Water spots form within hours
- Apply a glass protector: Rain-X or similar hydrophobic coating on shower screens repels water and slows limescale formation. Reapply monthly
- Water softener: For high-end properties, an inline water softener (€200-€400 installed) dramatically reduces limescale throughout the property
Removing Existing Limescale
- Chrome taps: Wrap a cloth soaked in white vinegar around the tap for 15 minutes. Scrub with a non-abrasive pad. Rinse and dry
- Shower screens: Spray limescale remover (Viakal, HG, or similar). Leave 5 minutes. Scrub with a non-scratch scourer. Rinse top to bottom
- Toilet bowl: Pour limescale remover under the rim. Leave for 30 minutes (or overnight for severe buildup). Scrub with a toilet brush
- Showerhead: Unscrew and soak in a bowl of white vinegar for 2 hours. Use a toothpick to clear blocked nozzles
- Tiles and grout: Spray limescale remover on affected areas. Scrub grout lines with a stiff brush. Rinse thoroughly
Warning: Never use limescale remover on natural stone (limestone, marble). The acid dissolves the stone. Use pH-neutral cleaners on stone surfaces.
Frequency for Short-Let Properties
- Every turnover: Wipe and dry all chrome fixtures. Quick spray of taps and shower screen with limescale remover
- Weekly: Full limescale treatment of toilet, shower screen, and all taps
- Monthly: Descale showerheads, clean washing machine with descaler, check kettle
- Quarterly: Deep clean including grout scrubbing and heavy limescale removal in all wet areas
